“We would advise that you take this seriously,” Detective Warren said. Carolyn added cream to his coffee and passed it to him, sat down at the conference room table next to her father. Dennis had insisted the meeting be held at The Porn Emporium rather than at the local detachment office.

“I don’t have time for this nonsense,” he’d said. “If we go down there then I’ve got to spend another half-hour saying hi to all the guys, all that customer relations stuff. And I also don’t want to give this more attention than it deserves.”

With three threatening letters now laid out on the table in front of them, Carolyn hoped he was reconsidering their importance.

“This White Brigade,” Detective Warren said. A sip of his coffee had left the ends of his greying mustache wet. “A group of anti-porn radicals turned terrorists. They blew up their first place in East End, Saskatchewan, last year. Lovely little spot called The Pleasure Palace. Took my son there on vacation the month before. No one was hurt, but still: a real loss to the community.” He dipped his mustache again.

All three were encased in clear plastic evidence bags, each one of them only a few sentences long and printed on clean white stationary. The first one read:

Dear MacDonald Family:

We herewith respectfully request that you close down your Porn Emporium effective immediately. Your kind of business is an affront to all human (and animal) life.

If you do not listen to us we will be forced to act.

We thank you for your kind attention to this threat.
